WHO: ‘VIRUS MAY NEVER GO AWAY’: Representatives of the World Health Organization hold a briefing on the latest developments of the global novel coronavirus outbreak. ‘This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away,’ WHO Emergencies Director Dr. Mike Ryan warned at a briefing earlier this week: ‘I don't think anyone can predict when or if this disease will disappear,’ he added. In the face of warnings like this, President Donald Trump has pushed for a rapid reopening across the United States, all while promising, on various occasions, that it would be just days until case totals reach 0, that the virus would go away in April ‘with the heat,’ and that the situation was ‘very much in hand.’ Trump has attempted to shift blame away from his administration’s response to the pandemic, and has pointed fingers at the World Health Organization, and has halted American funding to the group. There are currently 4,444,670 confirmed cases of COVID-19 throughout the world, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The United States alone accounts for 32% of those cases.
