Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam along with Dr. Howard Njoo, Canada's deputy chief public health officer provided an update on the country's current COVID-19 numbers and situation on Tuesday.

Tam expressed concerns over the recent increase in COVID-19 reported cases in the past week.

"I want to underscore that when cases occur, including in schools, it’s a reflection of what’s happening in the community," she added.

However, Njoo said the recent surge in cases doesn't mean Canada is in its second wave of COVID-19 yet.

Tam discussed safety measures and reiterated on public health practices to be used in schools as students head back to classrooms.

She said that the next two weeks will be critical to understanding the impact of students being back at schools.

A total of 132,142 COVID-19 cases, including 9,146 deaths have been reported to public health as of Tuesday.

An average of 545 new cases was reported daily during the most recent 7 days.
